Leder reinigen und pflegen – so geht’s

Cleaning and caring for leather – that's how it works

Just like our skin, leather has to be cleaned and cared for regularly to keep it supple and beautiful for a long time. It is particularly important to select the right products and, of course, the right technology. Below we show you how it works using a leather jacket and our favorite Otter Wax products.

Cleaning – quick and easy, for all types of leather

It is important to clean a leather jacket regularly, and not just for visual reasons. If dirt or mud gets on the jacket, it draws moisture out of the leather and it dries out. In the worst case, this can lead to cracks that can no longer be repaired.

Our favorite way to clean leather is Otter Wax Saddle Soap . It consists of 100% natural ingredients, effectively removes dirt and is still gentle on the leather.

What you need for this:

  • Otter Wax Saddle Soap
  • A small, soft brush
  • Warm water
  • Lint-free cloth

Step 1:

Dip the brush in warm water, lather the Saddle Soap with it and start cleaning your leather jacket with the brush in circular movements.

Step 2:

Now dip the lint-free cloth in warm water and use it to wash the soap and dirt off the leather. But make sure that the cloth is not too wet.

The result:

Otter Wax Saddle Soap makes cleaning your leather jacket quick and easy. The fact that the leather takes on a darker color is completely normal and will fade over time. Now all you have to do is let the jacket dry and you can continue with the care.

The care - for heavily and less heavily stressed leather

If you love your leather jacket, you should not only keep it clean, but also give it regular care. Depending on how stressed the leather is, there are different options for this.

Leather Salve – the intensive care

Like all Otter Wax products, Leather Salve is 100% natural and a great way to restore the old shine to stressed leather, slow down the aging process and prevent damage.

What you need for this:

  • Leather Salve
  • Lint-free cloth
  • real hair brush

Step 1:

Apply the Leather Salve evenly to the leather jacket with the lint-free cloth in circular movements. If some areas are particularly dry, simply use a larger amount.

Step 2:

You can also work the Leather Salve in with your fingers in more difficult areas such as seams or edges. Since the leather jacket takes on a slightly darker color due to the intensive care, it is important that you apply it evenly and do not miss any areas. This is the only way to get an even color result in the end.

Step 3:

Allow the Leahter Salve to sit and dry for about 30 minutes. After that, a thin, white layer has formed on the jacket, which shows that the leather has been fully saturated with the intensive care product.

Step 4:

You can now work the white layer into the leather with the brush. If necessary, you can also use your fingers to rework difficult areas. You can simply wipe off excess care.

The result:

Even if this method is a bit more complex, it is worthwhile, especially for heavily used leather. Because the intensive care makes the leather supple again, beautiful and less susceptible. In order for the Leather Salve to fully soak in, you should now hang your leather jacket in a warm and dry place for at least 72 hours.

Tip:

Regular maintenance is important. That's why we recommend using the Leather Salve at least once a year. In the best case, at the end of the season, before you send your leather jacket to the winter break.

Leather Oil – quick care for in between

If you want to do something good for your leather jacket in between and with less effort, you should use Otter Wax Leather Oil . Quick and easy to use, it gives the leather the right care for in between.

What you need for this:

  • Leather Oil
  • natural hair brush
  • Lint-free cloth

Step 1:

After shaking the bottle, you simply put some on a lint-free cloth and apply it directly to the leather.

Tip:

Just like leather, the rubber sole on your leather shoes, for example, can also dry out. So while you're at it, we recommend putting a little oil on there as well to prevent them from becoming porous.

Step 2:

Now use a real hair brush to work the oil evenly into the leather. It is important that you do not forget any spot and pay special attention to the seams.

The result:

In contrast to intensive care, Otter Wax Leather Oil is applied much more quickly and is therefore ideal for everyday use. The care is ideal for in between and the shine that occurs immediately after application is gone after just a few hours.

Tip:

The more regularly you care for your leather jacket with Leather Oil, the less often you need to use the intensive care product. It is best for you to decide individually what care the leather needs at the moment.

Of course, you can not only use Otter Wax Saddle Soap, Leather Salve and Leather Oil to clean your leather jacket. Pants, shoes, backpacks or saddlebags are also perfectly cleaned and cared for with it.
